Boyer Children's Clinic
Seattle, Washington
one review
Why did you choose this fieldwork?
It is a birth-to-three outpatient therapy clinic that is well-known and well-respected by the pediatric community in the greater Seattle area. It is close to the University of Washington. All the therapists and educators are first-rate, their community is professional and supportive, and the OTs are phenomenal, which makes Boyer a clear first choice for pediatric fieldwork.
Please indicate type of setting:
Outpatient, Clinic, School, Pediatric
Please describe your living and commuting situation. (Was accomodation offered? Public transportation or parking offered? Please include price paid, location and conditions.)
No accommodations for living arrangements or public transportation provided. I live in the area and was able to both bus (43, 48) or drive to Boyer. Street parking is available, but talk to Boyer staff about it, as neighbors request Boyer staff park in certain areas only.
Describe types of conditions or diagnoses, as well as age ranges exposed to during this fieldwork.
Developmental delay, autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, seizure disorder, CVA, other probable genetic disorders, behavioral issues, feeding issues, sensory processing disorder/issues.
What types of assessments and interventions were used?
Interventions: Battelle Developmental Inventory, Peabody Developmental Motor Scale 2nd ed., Bailey Infant Scale of Development, Infant/Toddler Sensory Profile.
Interventions: Play based, fine motor, gross motor, sensory integration component, NDT-based movement facilitation, oral-motor feeding, food-chaining.
What are your thoughts on the site's environment for the employees and students? (Please consider: organization, collaboration, mentoring, learning opportunities)
Environment is supportive for growth, collaborative, professional. Most therapists and educators are invested in your learning and willing to answer your questions even if you are not assigned to them; they will also offer you both positive and critical feedback-- whatever is in your best interest. There are opportunities to observe other disciplines in 1:1 treatment, as well as participate in classroom activities.
Please comment on personality traits and/or preparation that would facilitate success at this site.
It is critical to be able to play with and meet kids on their level. An open mind, willing attitude, flexible, open with communication, feedback-receptive person will thrive here. Learning humility is important, and appropriate assertiveness is valuable. Parent dialogue and coaching happen regularly, so professionalism, rapport building with adults, and confidence are also important.
While in the area, don't miss ...
The arboretum is very close, as is the Greek Orthodox Church (they have a festival in early autumn). Nearby establishments/neighborhoods (drivable) include Eastlake Bar and Grill, Cafe Lago, the University Ave, University Village, Madison Avenue.
How many stars would you give your experience, from one to five?
5
Any lasting thoughts or advice?
Since Boyer is such a great experience (and they know it), they want to help grow a pediatric therapist. You should only come for a long fieldwork if you are pretty sure pediatric therapy is in your future-- not to determine if it's in your future.
