Why did you choose this fieldwork?
As an "out of state student" in California, my options were limited. Many Colorado placements would only take CSU students, but I was very lucky to find this setting!!
Please indicate type of setting:
Inpatient, Acute, Subacute, Hand Therapy
Please describe your living and commuting situation. (Was accomodation offered? Public transportation or parking offered? Please include price paid, location and conditions.)
Accommodations were not offered, I lived at home with my parents. I commuted each day by care, street parking was available.
Describe types of conditions or diagnoses, as well as age ranges exposed to during this fieldwork.
Ages ranged from 18 through 99! Mostly I was on the cardiac care, orthopedic, or ICU floors. There was also some time spent on the Transitional Care Unit (think early rehab), which was a great experience. I also got to spend some time with the hand therapist. Most exciting was learning all about the different programs at the hospital, i spent time with the cardiac rehab team, watched a surgery, and really felt like a part of the hospital by the time it was all over!!
What types of assessments and interventions were used?
Mini-Mental - mostly informal evaluation
What are your thoughts on the site's environment for the employees and students? (Please consider: organization, collaboration, mentoring, learning opportunities)
This was a great place to be an intern. I felt so supported by everyone in the hospital and felt that I learned a lot about how OT's can function in a hospital setting. I especially liked the small community hospital setting. I had two mentors who were amazing and very supportive throughout the experience.
Please comment on personality traits and/or preparation that would facilitate success at this site.
Be prepared to go home and look up treatment ideas. You should be fairly personable and easy going to fit in at this hospital. If you are looking for fast paced and stressful this is not the setting for you!!
While in the area, don't miss ...
Well... we are close to the mountains so make sure you take some good hikes, go for a bike ride, see Boulder, and visit Denver at least one time!
How many stars would you give your experience, from one to five?
5
