Boulder Valley School District
Boulder, Colorado
one review
Why did you choose this fieldwork?
I really wanted to work in the school districts and wanted to see what a school district job would be like.
Please indicate type of setting:
School
Please describe your living and commuting situation. (Was accomodation offered? Public transportation or parking offered? Please include price paid, location and conditions.)
I lived at home with my parents. You must have a car for this site, as you will be driving between schools and it is not always possible to ride along with your mentors. Accommodations and transportation are not included. There is no fee to participate in this setting.
Describe types of conditions or diagnoses, as well as age ranges exposed to during this fieldwork.
Lots of kids! I was excited to work with preschool through age 21 in the special education classrooms. A very wide variety of diagnosis was seen from Autism spectrum, Down Syndrome, CP, MR, etc...
What types of assessments and interventions were used?
BNO, VMI, BOT-2,WOLD sentence copy, along with informal evaluation.
Interventions varied from in class inclusive interventions to Pull out client's who needed work on gross motor, fine motor, hand writing, and computer skills. Special education classrooms were also included with a focus on some ADL and AADL.
What are your thoughts on the site's environment for the employees and students? (Please consider: organization, collaboration, mentoring, learning opportunities)
This was a challenging setting because I had two mentors and spent half time with each one. However, I felt that this allowed me to gain more experiences and see two totally different approaches to OT. Learning opportunities were limited to the school environment. I did receive the opportunity to work with PT and SLP during this experience. I also got to sit in on lots of trainings and meetings for the OT's and meetings for student IEP's with parents which was a great learning experience.
Please comment on personality traits and/or preparation that would facilitate success at this site.
This placement would be different for each person as you will likely have different mentors than I did! If you are very organized, like to spend time looking up pediatric treatment ideas, love doing arts and crafts and ADL and AADL, and are interested in handwriting, this is the placement for you!
While in the area, don't miss ...
Boulder is full of fun opportunities. I was lucky to have one of their mountain schools, which was a fun drive every morning! Be sure to take a nice hike, visit Denver, see a Bronco's game, and enjoy the sunshine or Snow,
How many stars would you give your experience, from one to five?
